Tommy and Frank squared off this week with last place looming and Tommy
prevailing. Although there are still 8 weeks to the finish line, an early
show-down has given Tommy a 3-game lead - HOWEVER - Trevor has joined the last
place race thanks to his defeat by Rocky. Trevor has thus replaced Tommy as
next-to-last in the standings while Frank will get another chance to reduce his
deficit as he plays Trevor in one of his DH games this week. ASStonishing!
The owners meeting last Sunday at Trevor's was a great gathering with superb
food and drink. Master BBQ chef Trevor again excelled with his tasty delectables
and was assisted by Tyler and "Placker" Joe. An added bonus was seeing and
visiting with Joey, the other Humphrey bro (who also chipped in) and that we
don't often get a chance to see. Payments made by those to Arkansas are
reflected in the "Standings" web page. The following OFL business was discussed:
- Suicide Pools: Tommy's proposal to eliminate buy-backs was rejected. There was

(CONTINUED - PAGE 2)
also discussion (no resolution) about adding an "extreme" SUI pool based on
point spreads. Further discussion is needed if we want to add next season.
- Monday Night Lineup Replacements: Much discussion re Arkansas' proposal, but
again no resolution for incorporating next season. Several pros/cons were aired
and need to be addressed. See (UNC) Rocky's "OFL Charter Notes" below.
- IR Utilization: Subject was broached by Tyler and several tangential aspects
re the IR roster position caused additional dialog with the subject quickly
becoming complicated. It was shelved for the time being.
- Auction Draft: Our annual nemesis did not conjure overwhelming support and is
thus still an open item. And it didn't help that we had owners absent. Dom has
suggested a Mock Auction (Mocktion?) to address concerns, especially with
familiarity. When this could be done is an issue - remember, if we're going to
incorporate we wanted to make a decision prior to the final standings this year.
Time's running out boys so offer CONSTRUCTIVE (vice "wise-ass") suggestions.
"OFL Charter Notes" by (UNC) Rocky:
The document defines the OFL's by-laws and rules. Over the past 40+ years, the
size of the Charter has grown by roughly 6-fold. As the League evolved and
changes to the rules were incorporated, these changes at times were disquieting
because discrepancies and resultant resolutions often became contentious between
owners. What sometimes seemed like a good change, quickly became a "bag of
worms" and we were forced to make more Charter modifications to not only further
delineate a new rule to clarify its intent, but to also plug the (loop)holes for
specifications that were not completely unambiguous, i.e they didn't cover all
possibilities - thus the document's growth. In its current state, the Charter is
tried-and-true and we STILL sometimes have controversy issues. As such, we have
learned over the years that making changes must be well thought out and not done
"willy-nilly" because it seems like a good idea. That's not to say we shouldn't
consider rules changes, but they should be examined thoroughly to avoid future
controversy for we now know that haphazard changes will again be painful and
probably cause contention among owners - it's better to get it right the first
time. For example: aside from what I believe are inherent inequities for owners
who also have later games just not on Monday Night, I have thought of several
scenarios re Arkansas' proposal above that could cause problems. So before
considering this change or any of the other changes mentioned above (and I'm not
saying we should not), let's go over all implications and potential outcomes of
a rule change and make sure it doesn't introduce bias. This approach not only
ensures a completely coherent rule, but is implemented with the equity of
competition at the forefront. With this in mind, remember that rules are
developed with certain boundaries and inferences to accommodate the MAJORITY of
cases (in the Arkansas proposal: boundary = lineup submission deadline and
inference = "doing your homework" to create a lineup). We thus shouldn't create
a rule that caters to an almost-never instance UNLESS TRULY NEEDED - let the
bounds and inferred process(es) dictate how owners execute their duties.
